The Valentine’s Day party is this week. Are you ready?! Make this fun, adorable DIY mailbox for your little angel to collect their Valentine’s Day Cards at school this week. All the supplies can be found at your local craft store and don’t cost much at all.
Ahhhhh. Look at how happy your kid will be when you give him this rad mailbox to take to school!
Here’s what you’ll need to make this DIY mail box project:
- Smoothfoam Sheet 1″ x 6″ x 12″
- Smoothfoam Star, 6 Pack
- Red Glitter – Clearsnap
- Red Acrylic Paint – DecoArt
- Hot Glue for Foam, Glue Gun – AdTech
- Red Felt, Patterned Felt – Kunin Group
- Scissors, Ruler – Westcott Brand
- Rotary Paper Trimmer
- Paper Plate
- Foam Paint Brush
The basics of this DIY mailbox project are a Smoothfoam base with a cardboard roof, covered with felt.
You do not need any fancy craft supplies for this project, which is one of the reasons I love. After Valentine’s Day, use it to store coloring books and paper for drawing.
Glitter the easy way
I have a friend who has outlawed glitter in her house. Glitter has such a bad rep! I glittered this star using one of my favorite tips – use PAINT to “glue” the glitter to the Smoothfoam star. Paint the star to color it. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle glitter on the star. Stick a pin in the star before painting so you have a way to hold the star without touching it with your fingers. Set in a small pile of glitter and allow to dry. I like to use a paper plate under glitter to catch it but if you are really worried about glitter being in your house and carpet, apply glitter outside over a trash can. Glitter is not expensive so let’s not pretend we need to save the excess that shakes off a project. We’re about smart, practical DIY here, right?!
I used buttons and ribbon from my stash to embellish the bow. The closure is just a bead that I hot glued to the top of the mail box. Hook the doors in place with a loop of ribbon.
Pin the image above so that even if you didn’t have a chance to make this project this year, you have the idea saved for next year. these don’t HAVE to be Valentine’s Mailboxes either. Change the colors for a baby shower decoration, wedding decor, or even just to make for your house. We kept this mailbox on our mantel as a decoration before Matt took it to school for the Valentine’s Day party.

How are you celebrating Valentine’s Day?
Let me know in the comments! It’s kind of cool that it falls on President’s Day this year. I think we may be going to Disneyland…
